Task 1 : Types of Tourism

Before we discuss about types of tourism, you have to know what tourism is. Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating hours.

There are so many kinds of tourism, but I will mention 5 types only. So here it is :

1. Culinary Tourism

Culinary tourism is defined as the pursuit of unique and memorable eating and drinking experiences. By combining travel with these edible experiences, culinary tourism offers both locals and tourists alike an authentic taste of place in the bountiful province.

It includes any tourism experience in which a person learns about, appreciates, consumes, or-dare we say-indulges in food and drink that reflects the local cuisine, heritage, or culture of a place. Culinary tourism is not limited to gourmet food. In fact, we like to use the term 'food tourism' more often than not just to keep it from feeling elitist. It is about what's unique, authentic and memorable about the food stories of their regions have to tell. This includes the farmers, the cheese mongers, fishermen, brewers, winemakers, and everyone in between.

example :  Local/Regional Food and Wine Festivals and Events; Grower-Restaurant Partnerships; Visiting a production facility/factory/smokehouse; Food Harvest, etc.

2.CULTURAL TOURISM

There's no one, all-encompassing definition of cultural tourism. Simply put, cultural tourism means experiencing a cultural activity while outside of your home community. This simple definition includes a full range of travelers and activities.

example :
  • Heritage Trail uses art to link people, trail, river, and heritage (historic waterways through New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine).
  • The Great Western Muse Cruise (electronic showcase of Canadian arts and culture - presented in a format for travelers)

3. DOMESTIC TOURISM

Domestic tourism is defined as tourism involving residents of one country traveling within that country and domestic tourism expenditure incurred as a direct result of this activity. It includes the spending that occurs while en-route and at the places visited as well as the expenditure taken prior to the trip preparation of the trip

example :

  • Domestic & Foreign Tourism in Indonesia Expected to Rise at Year-End
  • Tourism in Indonesia : 9.3 Million Foreign Visitors Expected in 2014

4. RELIGIOUS TOURISM

Religious tourism, also commonly referred to as faith tourism, is a type of tourism, where people travel individually or groups for pilgrimage, missionary, or leisure (fellowship) purposes. The world's largest form of mass religious tourism takes place at the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Modern religious tourists are able to visit holy cities and holy sites around the world. The most famous holy cities are Mecca, Medina, Karbala, Fatima, Jerusalem and the Vatican City.

example :

  • Great Mosque of Mecca
  • the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Cova da Iria
  • the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City
  • the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem
  • the Western Wall in Jerusalem
  • the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome

5. MEDICAL TOURISM

Medical tourism refers to people traveling to a country other that their own to obtain medical treatment. In the past this usually referred to those who traveled from less-developed countries to major medical centers in highly developed countries for treatment unavailable at home

However, in recent years it may equally refer to those from developed countries who travel to developing countries for lower priced medical treatments.

example :

Medical tourism most often is for surgeries (cosmetic or otherwise) or similar treatments, though people also travel for dental tourism or fertility tourism. People with rare conditions may travel to countries where the treatment is better understood. However, almost all types og health care are available, including psychiatry, alternative medicine, convalescent care, and even burial services.
